THE TRUTH ABOUT DIY

Happy Monday!  Today I am going to tell you the nitty-gritty truth about DIY!

My blog post “plan” for today included a tutorial on how to make an absolutely adorable farmhouse sign for your home.  I practiced the technique several times before I even started on the official project, which happened to be a sign to over a missing cabinet door in my kitchen.  For some reason when I moved into my cutie-patootie house, that one and only cabinet door was gone.  Nowhere to be found.

It’s the one that covers the microwave outlet:

My options were to find a replacement door, or cut and paint black a piece of wood that size, or make a fun and cute farmhouse sign.  Well, being “me” means that “fun and cute” won and I started working on the best way to make a sign.

Vinyl cut-outs were out of the question because I didn’t want to purchase a machine (although I think it would be really cool to have one!), and hand-painting a sign is super time-consuming (I know this because I have done it!).

After searching Pinterest I came across a great tutorial that involves a copier, some wood and water.  Seemed a good fit for my project!

Let me give you a glimpse of the potential cuteness of my project:

I tried the technique numerous times and found success until….I went to do it on my actual piece for my kitchen.  And then it all went awry!

When I began removing the paper to expose the lettering, the lettering came off too.  Completely!:

So, this sign that I made, that held so much promise (it was going to be SO CUTE!!!) is headed to the trash.

And I am starting over.

And that, my friends is the plain truth about DIY.

Sometimes it does NOT go as planned.  Sometimes projects get thrown in the trash.  Sometimes you have to start over.  And sometimes you have find an entirely different way.

Kind of like life, don’t you think?

But in my opinion, life is the biggest DIY we are all in the process of doing.  Things work and things don’t, but giving up is not an option.  Unless we want life to halt and stay stagnant.

Or if we want a big blank space above our microwave.

Neither one of those works for me.
