PAINT YOUR OWN DOORMAT IN 10 MINUTES
Lately, I am in the mood for fun, fast DIYs!
Maybe it is the warm weather and my desire to be outside playing. Why spend all day making stuff when you can gather a few materials and create a fun item for you home?
This doormat is not only useful, but it adds some character and whimsy for your visitors. Let them know you are happy to see them even before you open your door!
Let’s gather our supplies:
- One Coir Doormat I really love how this type of doormat works for this project!
- Black Spray Paint
- Stencil
- Painter’s Tape
- Newprint Paper
Before you begin: Pick your stencil. I made my stencil with my Silhouette Cameo Cutting Machine, but you can visit Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and buy the stencil of your choice. Individual letter stencils would work well too. I also found this custom stencil on Amazon for $12.50!
Step One: Position your stencil on your doormat as desired:
Step Two: Tape your stencil in place and add newsprint paper all around the stencil. This helps to avoid getting overspray on your mat. I covered my mat completely. My “paint station” is my grass for projects like this. I laid out a black trash bag underneath the mat. Any overspray on the grass was mowed off the next day:
Step Three: Spray your mat several times, letting the paint dry between sprays. I went over mine 5 times with a light spray. I find that a number of layers of light paint work a lot better than 1 or 2 thick, heavy coats:
Step Four: Remove your stencil, tape and paper and you are done! I let my mat dry for 24 hours before using it so that the paint set nicely.
Now you have a fun and cute way to welcome your guests to your home!
I hope you enjoyed learning how to paint your own doormat. Be sure to take a bit of time this summer to create and make your home a lovely space to dwell!
