FLIPPING FURNITURE FOR BEGINNERS
Flipping furniture is a perfect way to either add some adorable pieces to your home or a great way to earn a bit of cash.
In the small town where I live I am constantly coming up with cheap or free pieces that I can work with and customize to my liking. To be honest I have never paid more than $10 for any piece of furniture and more often than not, I pay $5 or less. And to get really honest I do not know if that is just luck or if I am just extremely cheap.
For the sake of this post, I am going to stick with option #1. That is my story and I am sticking to it!
Obviously, there are some techniques involved in flipping furniture, but I have always assumed that the low starting price makes it worth taking a chance. Why not try something out on a $5 piece and see what happens. The worst thing is that the piece might end up in the trash, but the price makes that OK, in my opinion.
You can grab my THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE FLIPPING FURNITURE list from my resource library (access is at the bottom of this post). It is a good, basic reference of things to remember when you set out to start a project.

Here is my list of favorite items to use when flipping furniture:
- Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Home Right Sprayer
- Stainable Wood Filler
- Dewalt Orbital Sander
- Minwax Clear Coat
Now, I do not use all of those items on every single piece, but they all get used most of the time. My orbital sander is my favorite of the three types of sanders that I own. I think it gives the best finish for painting.
I find it oddly relaxing to paint chairs with foam brushes even though it takes a long time. Everything else gets the sprayer treatment. My Home Right Sprayer is easy to use and quick to clean. Plus it is super affordable! Sometimes the paint needs to be watered down just a bit. Make sure it is not dripping when you spray it.
Here are a few of my favorite blog posts that detail how to get the job done:

My hope is that you feel ready to tackle your first furniture flipping project!

Randi,
How much chalk paint would you need to paint a 2 shelf bookcase? I don’t want a lot of paint left over since I’m not in the States.
I would say a quart would be plenty. Just depends on what color the piece is and how many coats you will need. If you have a black shelf and you want to paint it white, it will take more. If you are sticking with “like” colors you might be able to use 8 oz.
Randi 🙂
It’s a natural unfinished wood. I’d that will make a difference, you can let me know. Otherwise, I’ll plan on a quart. Thanks for the help, Randi!
If it is a small piece then 8 oz might be enough. I always tend to buy a little more than I need….just in case! 🙂
Flipping furniture has always been a centre of attraction to me. I will soon start my first furniture flip project, and I am sure this post will help me a lot.

Thanks for sharing, Randi! I’ve always been interested in breathing new life to older furniture like this, but never really had the know-how or the patience. I’ll be referring back here when I’m ready to give it another try! Happy to have found your link over at My Girlish Whims!
