A friend of mine was going through some old furniture and asked me if I wanted a dresser. This was right after I had gotten rid of some excess items that I had picked up at yard sales over the year and almost said “no”. It seemed silly to fill up the space I had just created in my garage! But I said “yes” and I am so happy that I did!
I love furniture pieces that have skeleton key locks. Now I will admit that I have no skeleton key to lock or unlock the drawers, but I am fine with that! It is the look that I like.
Let me tell you a secret about this dresser: although it has a great look, it smelled terrible when I first got it. Seriously, I was not sure if I could even use it. Mice had made themselves very comfortable in the drawers. Also, the person who previously owned it was a wonderful man and an enthusiastic pot smoker (remember that I live in Colorado!).
Vinegar and baking soda proved to be quite effective in getting the smell out. The full process did take me about one week. Patience was a must! (Click here to find out about the process!)
Initially, my thought was to paint this Duck Egg blue, but I will ultimately place this against a seaglass colored wall. I felt the white would stand out nicer. Remember this when flipping a piece of furniture: paint it according to where it will be placed. You might not want too much color or too much white in one spot in a living space.

This dresser is gorgeous!!! I love the clean lines, and those key holes just make me happy. So glad you were able to get the smell out and bring this beauty back to life!
Can you expand on getting rid of smells in drawers? I have had that issue and have yet to be successful. Like your work!
I am working on a post about that issue in particular. Coming soon…:)
