5 COMMON PITFALLS IN BUYING OLD FURNITURE
Flipping furniture is one of my favorite things to do! It allows me to find inexpensive or free pieces and make them over to suit my taste and decorating style.
There are, however, some things to pay attention to. You do not want to come home with a piece that is far more of a complicated job than you imagined, as that can be discouraging!
Be sure to scroll below for your free printable “How To Remove Odors From Old Furniture”. It will be quite helpful when the piece that capture your attention smells bad but looks great!

5 Common Pitfalls In Buying Old Furniture
Unstable, Rickety Pieces
When I am at a yard sale I always “shake” the furniture I am considering buying. Nothing aggressive, of course, but I do like to know the piece I buy is stable and will not wobble when shaken. If I absolutely love a piece and it is rickety I can either fix it or use it for something that is for looks only. For example: you can use a chair as a plant stand when sitting in it is not an option.
Bad Odors
I do not want to bring a piece into my house and find that it smells awful. So, yes, I lean down and smell furniture, and I open drawers and doors to make sure all is well. You can scroll below to download my “How To Remove Odors From Old Furniture” printable that will help with even the most obnoxious odors!
Peeling Veneer
Depending on how bad this is, you can fix things up nicely with some wood glue. Simple squeeze glue under the peeling piece, press firmly and let dry. You should be good to go once the glue is dried completely.
Scuffs and Scratches
These can be removed with some sandpaper and a little bit of time. If you are wanting to avoid sanding you can use Paste Finishing Wax to fill in the scratches.
Badly Worn Paint Job
Technically I do not consider this a problem since I always paint the pieces that I buy. But if you want to use a piece as is, be sure to pay a lot of attention to the paint all over the piece. Feel free to move a piece around to get a good look at all sides. And, of course, if you do not like what the paint job looks like now, you can always paint it yourself!
