THINGS TO SEW FOR THE HOME
DIY Home Decor sewing tutorials are a great way to get the look you love in your home on a budget! And sewing up beautiful items adds comfort and coziness to your farmhouse, rustic style.
I have been spending a bit too much time on Pinterest lately and I found all of these beautiful items. They seemed quite worthy of sharing with you! You will find everything from pillows to shower curtains to aprons. There are some beautiful and inspiring pieces for you!
One of the first things I ever sewed for my own home was a pillow cover. That was a long time ago and distinctly remember that it came out terrible. BUT the part that looked bad was on the back so I used the pillow anyway, always careful to keep it turned towards the front.
Problem solved, don’t you think?
I am telling you this because I think you can do this! We all have to be beginners at some point, and my hope is that for you the time is NOW!

HOME SEWING PROJECTS FOR BEGINNERS
It can be overwhelming deciding where to start with sewing projects, especially if you are a beginner. My best tip for you is to just jump in with a sewing tutorial designed just for you. All of the goodness I am linking to is for beginners.
One thing to keep in mind when making your first home decor accessory is that it is perfectly normal and acceptable to end up with a project that is not quite what you expected. Fabric is quite affordable if you buy it on sale and it is not a big deal to try, try again.
Pinterest is a great resource for sewing instruction and tips when you are making things to sew for the home. I found this post on Sew Some Stuff through Pinterest and it looks like it has some good links.
Personally, I like to develop some skills in the basic areas before I try something new. If you are a more of an adventurer, just dig right in and start sewing. Every project you attempt builds your skills in some way…even if you learn what NOT to do!

EASY SEWING PROJECTS FOR THE HOME
Home sewing can be quite technical if you pick the wrong projects. Honestly, I have sewn for many years (I used to own a fabric store!) and I still stick to the simpler side of things. I am not the type of person who enjoys getting bogged down in a craft project that is too challenging and burdensome. I am all about quick wins!
Now only have I linked curtains and pillows in this post, I have also linked aprons and blankets. Really when it comes to home sewing projects for beginners there is so much to choose from.
You may be wondering how to pick out fabric for your pieces. Well, I would LOVE to help you with that!
Often when it comes to sewing home decor items it is best to stick with home decor fabrics. These are usually located in a particular section of the store…all you need to do is flag an employee down to find them. It is best to feel the fabrics and decide if you like the “feel” of it. It is too heavy or light. Does it seem like it will wrinkle quickly? Do you like the texture of the fabric? And most importantly, do you like the color and the print?
When it comes to color and print I always suggest that you select what you love. If you do not care if everything in your house matches, then just be brave and buy whatever you like. If you are more of a matchy-matchy type (like me) keep in mind the colors scheme you already have at home and stick with that. You don’t have to pick exact matches, but coordinating colors and hues of the same colors will look great and add visual interest to your home.
I do suggest that you avoid adding too many different prints into one room as that can be visually irritating. A couple of complimentary prints tend to be enough, but you are the one to decide how much is too much. Just don’t be afraid of print and color since they add so much life to a space.

Did you find anything you like within that wonderful list? I sure hope you did!
My biggest encouragement to you is jump in and make something. Make a trip to the fabric store and buy your supplies and come home and sit at your machine. You will come out with a project that you made yourself and you will have learned many good things in the process. And I can pretty much guarantee that you will be hunting for a second project to make soon after!
If you make something you see here today I would love to see! Come on over to my Facebook group and share a picture and tell me how it went. And as always, you are welcome to reach out to me through email for help and direction!
