EASY AND FREE QUILT SEWING TUTORIALS FOR BEGINNERS
Modern Quilt Patterns For Beginners
Did y’all know that I used to own a fabric shop and that I taught quilting classes? Yes, I did and I LOVED IT! I closed my shop a few years ago when I was venturing into new territory…single life…but I still love to make a quilt now and then. You are going to love these easy and free quilt sewing tutorials for beginners!
You might be wondering “how is a quilt made”?
Well, the simple answer is that a quilt is made by cutting up pieces of fabric and sewing them back together into the desired pattern. Obviously, there are skills and techniques involved and the following DIY quilt sewing tutorials for beginners are going to help you navigate that.
When it comes to patchwork quilting for beginners I am going to give you the following advice:
- Start simple. Unless you are a real go-getter, it is best to start with the basics, build your skills and move up from there. Once you gain some success it will be natural to want to stick with it and try new things. I would suggest gaining a pretty sure handle on one thing before moving on to another.
- Do not go for perfection. Especially when you are first starting out with a new hobby, it is important to allow yourself to make some mistakes. Striving for perfect and getting frustrated when a project doesn’t come out the way you want it to is disheartening. But if you look at it as a learning curve you will be set! Often a first project teaches you a lot about what NOT to do next time!
- Make skill-building your #1 goal. The more techniques you feel comfortable with, the more types of quilts you will want to make. And the more quilts you make, the better you are going to get.
- Whether you chose an easy quilt to make in a day, a quick quilt to make in a weekend, or something more complicated, be sure to enjoy what you are doing and keep an eye on your prize: a beautiful handcrafted quilt you can keep or gift to a friend.

Quilting For Beginners Step-By-Step
One thing that I want you to remember is that everyone is a beginner at some point. We all have to start at square one, right?
Your first step is going to be to pick out a quilting tutorial that provides you with inspiration. Do you love the style? The color? The prints on the fabrics?
Keep in mind that you can make a quilt in any colors and prints you choose. All you need to pick first is the layout.
Again, my suggestion for beginners is to choose a simple quilt to start with. This will allow you to learn basic skills and to create a successful finished project. Trying something too difficult to begin with can lead to frustration. And you definitely do not want to start out with frustration in your first quilting adventure!
When it comes to color, I always say you should choose what you love. If you like orange and purple together, go for it! There is no reason to make household items that stick to the latest trends if you do not like those trends!
One way to start out if you need some direction is to find a large print that you love that has several colors. Florals are great for this! Pay attention to what draws you to the print and narrow down your color choices that way.
Another way to choose colors for your quilt is to get paint sample cards from your local home improvement store. Put together a combination of 3-5 colors that really catch your eye. Keep in mind that if you pick a dark turquoise you can use other variations of that color. The color cards will help give you a visual for this since they generally show several shades of one color.
Stacking your fabric choices allows you to see if you have enough variation to create a color scheme you like. When you are in the fabric store you can stack the bolts on a cart if you can not find a table to use. You do not want too much of one color to overshadow all of the others. If you really want a color to stand out, provide a lot of other colors for it to play with.
