HOW TO MAKE DIY BATHROOM SHELVES
How Do You Build Storage In A Small Bathroom?
I live in a small house with my daughter and one thing that I love to maximize is storage space! I downsized A LOT when I moved from a 5 bedroom, 4 bath house to my 3 bedroom, 1 bath home, but I still have stuff! These DIY bathroom shelf ideas are not only beautiful, but they are doable as well, and they all increase storage space.
If you have ever shopped for shelves you know that they are surprisingly expensive, especially when you want something stylish. If spending 70+ dollars to store toiletries is not on your horizon you will most likely find something here in these creative ideas that catch your eye.
Often in a bathroom, you can create storage over the toilet. In general, this wall is open and ready to be used. Use it in your small bathroom to accommodate decorative shelves!
Do not let yourself be limited by a small house. I have found that when I let myself get imaginative I come up with all kinds of creative and pretty storage solutions!
Pinterest is a great resource when you are lacking ideas with flair. Did you know you can search “bathroom storage” and add words like “creative” and “cute” to get what you want? Adding those words will take you beyond that basics and lead you to some great ideas and storage hacks. Add “DIY” to your search and you will find tutorials for miles.

Small Bathroom Shelf Ideas
My bathroom is not tiny, but my washer and dryer are housed in it, so they take up a lot of space. This has admittedly been challenging for my daughter and myself since we both had our own bathrooms prior to living in this house.
Lucky for me my bathroom countertop is quite large and we each have our own side. Between you and me, her side is always messier than mine! And, to be honest, her mess often bleeds over onto my side. Ah, teenagers! Gotta love ’em!
I use the shelves behind my toilet to store extra towels and toilet paper (that keeps it handy for guests) and a few decorative items. There is also a shelf that runs over the top of the washer and dryer that I use to store decorative items as well as using it as a table for detergent and fabric softener on laundry day.
Take advantage of the space you have to create the storage you need!
If you have a small linen closet, adding extra white wire shelves is a great way to add to your space. They are inexpensive and simple to install and quite useful. You can add baskets or crates to keep small items contained.
Floor space is useful for creating storage space as well. Wooden crates stacked on top of one another become shelves and they look great! Hobby Lobby carries wooden crates and they are priced well. Keep an eye out for a 40-50% off sale to make them ultra affordable!

Creative Bathroom Storage Ideas
Finding storage space in your bathroom is not a sexy topic. But if you are creative about it, it can be a fun adventure. I find that when I take the time to use space for function as well as beauty the finished product is quite enjoyable.
Take the time to really evaluate the space you do have and how you are using it. Removing a picture from the wall and replacing it with shelves is a win in a small bathroom. You can always add decorative items to the shelves along with the functional stuff. Folded towels add color while providing a purpose.
Under the sink (in the cabinet) is another place to find great space. Adding baskets, bins and pull-out shelves help to maximize what you have available. And in a small house, that is always the point, right?

These next couple of links are not as much tutorials as they are good ideas. They are storage hacks that look great!
I love the idea of using a wire basket as a shelf! It gives your space a farmhouse, rustic look and provides space to store things.
And those crates are so cute, don’t you think? That is the simplest way to create DIY bathroom shelves and I love that you can move the crates around to form different shapes for different uses! How about using one crate for each child’s goods? Or filling the crates with basics when you have houseguests? Of course, leave a bit of room for some pretty also!

Keep in mind when it comes to finding space in your small bathroom, it helps to really consider how you are using your space already. A ladder shelf not only adds character, but it doubles as a towel rack. You can even paint it a perfect color to match your space.
As with all DIYs I suggest that you pick one and try it out! You may end up with a perfect project, but even if it doesn’t quite come out how you pictured, you will have learned something new for your next piece.
And that is what DIY life is all about!
Happy DIYing, friends!
