How To Get Your Child Organized For School
Back to school time is here once again! And that means one thing for many families: back to school organization!
After the free and easy days of summer, it can be tough to get back into a schedule but it is more than necessary for both parents, kids, and teachers.
The big question is often “Where do I start?”.
One thing that always helps my daughter and me is to get things down on paper. This helps my child and me to “see” what needs to be done and what kind of plan we need to make things happen.
To make this simpler for you, I have created a cute downloadable student planner for your child. You can pick from 3 different colorways so that you can add a bit of personal style to your back to school plan.

One of the first things I do when I want to get organized is to come up with some sort of organizing system! More often than not, it is in the form of a planner of some sort with fill-in-the-blank lines. My favorite pen to use is the G2 Pilot Pen (generally I use the multi-colored pack) as this allows me to visually see how my week looks and what to expect. If my calendar is totally filled in I know that my week is a bit too full and that I need to check for where I can scale back. If my calendar has lots of blank space I can think about adding some extra things to do (or just relax and enjoy the rest!).
I have designed a cute planner for you all and it addresses daily, weekly and monthly goals for your student, as well as a homework planner. Download the planner and print as many as you need for the upcoming school year.
Your student can choose between 3 colorways to suit their personal style.
Use one color of G2 Pilot Pen for each type of activity on your schedule. For example blue for extracurricular activities, green for homework and orange for appointments. This works well to help you see what type of activity is dominating your week. You can make changes as needed to suit your student’s and family’s needs.
Another option is to use one color for assignments and their due dates. Switch colors for assignments turned in and grades.
You could also have your child use the colored pens, and add your own notes in the black ink.
And do not forget to use the pens to add little notes of encouragement for your child throughout the school year. This seems like a small thing, but it really is an important thing for our kids to know we believe in them!
Having a little fun with your G2 Pilot Pen purchased from Walmart is a perfect way for your little overachiever to shoot for the stars! G2 Pilot Pen is the number one selling gel ink pen in America and once you experience the smooth writing gel ink you will know why. I use them daily in my business and household!
And, yes, I do use different colors to mark different things on my business and household calendars and I LOVE that it helps me to see which items are heavy in our week. If the week looks too full the different colors help me to know where to pare down.

I created three colorways to appeal to your student’s sense of style! Add a colorful G2 Pilot Pen to the mix and your student will enjoy filling out his/her own schedule and planning for their school days. Helping your student to become independent in his school life is key to a successful school year. When someone takes ownership of their own time and goals, achieving success becomes desirable!

Back To School Organization Tips
Create a workable schedule
- Write down everything that needs to be done during the school week. Appointments, practices, meals, and homework.
- If it doesn’t work on paper, it will not work in real life.
- Do not fill up every spot on your calendar. Leave room in your schedule for “life” to happen. This is called “margin” and it allows for life’s fun detours as well as emergencies.
- Use a different colored G2 Pilot Pen for different items on your schedule. Blue for appointments and pink for homework will help you to visually see if one item dominates the schedule when it really shouldn’t.
- Be sure to set aside time for fun, relaxation, and self-care. After all, life can’t always be about checking things off of our to-do lists!
- Take some time to factor in meals for the week. Do you need to make and freeze some breakfast foods? Or maybe coming up with a meal plan and grocery list is needed.
- Anything that makes the week more doable for yourself and your child is worth considering!
Declutter your life
- Get rid of excess junk.
- Sell items you no longer use.
- Clear off shelves and clean closets to make more space. Do not fill it up with new stuff. Just enjoy the space!
- Clear out areas that can better be used to make your school year efficient. A junk drawer in the kitchen can contain school supplies while a small hall closet can house a desk and lamp to create a private homework station.
- Put away summer clothes and get out the fall and winter duds. Send unused items to the thrift store.
- Once you have decluttered you will have a good idea of what you actually need to purchase for the upcoming school year.
Pay attention to schoolwork goals and deadlines with your child
- This is one area that I think supervision is needed unless your child is highly self-motivated.
- Keep a copy of the class syllabus for yourself and one for your child.
- Mark down deadlines and possible start dates on your calendar.
- Make a note of the difficulty of the project—easy, average or hard.
- Be sure to schedule enough time for your child to complete a project.
- Download your free student planner printable PDF to keep track of everything!
Do you feel ready for school days to begin? I sure hope so! If not simply work your way through the suggestions in this post alongside your student and you will find yourself feeling more prepared. I promise!
Happy planning!
