HOME DECORATING IDEAS ON A BUDGET
Home decorating on a budget.
Can it be done? Yes! And the reason I say this is because I have done it.
Very well, I might add!
Sometimes when we think of decorating our homes, we generally think of lots of spendable cash and high-ticket purchases. But to be honest, I have decorated my home on a tight budget and I always get a load of compliments on the look and the homey feel of my house.
And you would be surprised to find the low cost of most of the goods on display.
Now, I did invest in a nice couch, but even that was not an expensive purchase. I took the time to find one I liked and one that fit nicely into my living space (my house is fairly small) and I bought it on sale.
When you are starting with no money (or practically no money), it is easy to get locked into thinking mode and never start the process.
But I am here to encourage you to avoid getting stuck in the mud. There are ways to overcome a tight budget and get what you want.
And I am going to tell you how to get started and create a living space that makes you smile!
BUDGET HOME DECOR IDEAS
- START FROM NOTHING – What do I mean by “start from nothing”? I mean take it all down. Yes, I said it. Take all of the decorative items down and remove them from the room you are working on. All of the pictures, the cute pieces you have sitting on tables, and the throw pillows. Once you have removed all of it, you can go through and decide what needs to come back in.
- GET RID OF THE CLUTTER – The clutter needs to go too as this will give you an idea of what needs to be organized as well as what type of foundation you are working from. Obviously, the clutter is not coming back and you will find new places to put it back in an organized fashion (you will be so glad you did this!).
- MAKE A LIST – After removing all of the decor and the clutter, will find items that you want to keep in your space because they match the style you are trying to achieve. At this point, you will want to make a list of items you need and want to add to your home decor look.
- SHOP SALES – This may seem obvious, but unless you are patient, it can be tough to shop sales. With your list in hand, you can shop in stores or online and write down items you really like, and wait for the price to be reduced. That is when you want to pounce and make it yours!
- SHOP YOUR HOME – You are going to be surprised at how much you already have that will create your new look. Chances are, you have already purchased goods that you love, but when you add them to a haphazard design, they do not stand out. Pick the items that are staying and feel free to give away or get rid of the rest. You do not need it cluttering up your home.
- MAKE IT YOURSELF – When it comes to budget home decor, DIY is where I REALLY save money! I have numerous furniture pieces in my house (tables, dressers, etc.) that are very cute, but that I paid less than $10 for. This is where the magic of sandpaper and paint will come in handy. Add some new drawer pulls, and you are set! You can also visit the DIY/Craft section of my blog for more ideas, and, of course, Pinterest is a treasure trove of amazing tutorials!
- TRADE OR BARTER – One thing I really dislike doing is painting walls! But since this is my #1 cheap tip for changing the look of a room, it has to be done. Trade work with a friend who loves a job that you hate. OR trade goods, such as a dresser for a table, to come up with something new for your home.

It is possible to integrate all of those points into your “home decor on a budget” plan, but you can also pick just one or two. Either way, you will be saving money and going forward in creating a home you love on a budget.
Refuse to let a tight budget get you down. Look at your goals in the face and make them happen.
Your alternative is to continue living in a home you do not love. And who wants to do that???
Not me!
My living space is my haven. It is peaceful and still and wonderful. And it reflects who I am and what I value in life.
Home decorating on a budget is not difficult, but you will have to be creative. When working with a tight budget, it is important to think beyond the basics. Rather than going to a furniture store and buying all of your favorite pieces, you are finding favorite pieces and bringing them to life on the cheap.
For example, when you go to a thrift store or yard sale, look around and imagine what you can paint. How would a piece look in a different color? Or you could go a little crazy and imagine how a chair might look after you recover it.
All of the things can be done, you just have to make them happen.
When you are starting with no money, DIY is the perfect place to start. Watch tutorials, build your skills and make new things. Not only will your home look great, but you will feel great about yourself as well.
And that is definitely a win-win!
Happy decorating!
