14 AMAZING UNDER BED STORAGE IDEAS
UNDER BED STORAGE DIY
If you are looking for more storage in your small home, look no further than under your bed!
Yes, you heard me—under the bed.
There is a ton of room in that space that you are not using (or is it stuffed with junk you are trying to hide???) and it is time to reclaim it!
Since my home is small, I struggle with not having enough storage space. When I first moved in I had all kinds of extra room on shelves, but after 5 years, well, you know how that goes.
Admittedly, I am on a mission to reorganize closets and drawers again, but I do love the idea of brand-new storage space! (Check out Home Organization Ideas if you are trying to get organized as well!).
The best thing about creating Under Bed Storage is that it does not have to look perfect. I mean, who is even going to see it?
This makes it very easy to DIY your space in any way you like, with whatever you have on hand. And if you want to make it cute, go for it. The under-bed storage ideas and tutorials below are both functional and decorative.
Read on for ideas on what you can store and how to figure out how much room is available under your bed.

UNDER BED STORAGE WITH WHEELS
Adding wheels to under-bed storage really makes access easy since you have to get down on the ground to reach things. Plus it will save wear and tear on your floor since you will not be dragging drawers or baskets out to get into them.
Let’s chat a little bit about WHAT to store!
First of all, you want to decide which items are going under the bed. Here are some under bed storage ideas:
- Shoes are perfect for under-bed storage because of their size. Not only are they not laying on the floor of your closet, but they are easy to access.
- Out-of-season clothes need a spot to stay out of sight for half of a year. And if you do not have shelf or drawer space, under your bed is perfect.
- Luggage often fits very nicely underneath your bed. It will depend on the height of your bed frame.
- Kid’s toys will store perfectly in drawers or baskets underneath their bed.
- Gift wrapping items are not used daily, so storing them under your bed is convenient.
- Blankets and throws during the warmer months.
- Games and puzzles that you bring out once in a while.
- An inflatable or trundle mattress (again, depending on the height of your bed frame.
- Books placed in drawers with the spines facing up so you can grab what you need quickly.

One obvious hurdle when it comes to under-bed storage is the height of your bed frame. My bed sits quite high so I would be able to fit anything on my above list under the bed.
Before deciding what to store you will need to measure from the floor to the bottom of your frame. This is your space that is wide open for storage. And the magic happens when you factor the size of your bed across.
The bigger your mattress, the better! Not only can you store items along the edges of your bed, but less frequently-used items can be stored in the center space under your bed. Be sure to use all the space you have.
Because I am not a big traveler, I could easily use the center space for luggage. Or old books. Or out-of-season shoes and clothes, since I only need to get them out every 6 months.
Just keep in mind how often you will need to access what is placed in that center space. You do not want to have to get that stuff out very often.

I absolutely love the idea of converting old dresser drawers into DIY under-bed storage containers! You can leave them as is, or paint them to match the look of your room. If I was able to see the drawers under my bed, I would definitely make them cute. But if my bed ruffle covered them, I would probably leave them be.
Under-bed storage is generally an untapped space to keep things out of sight. If the space is already filled with junk you do not need, simply drag it all out and decide what needs to go. Then decide what you want to store in that space.
In general, items that are not used often are the best choice, unless you have them stored around the edges of your bed. Leave that middle section for things you do not need often, but that you want to store.
And for kids, this space is like magic!
They can pull drawers out to get at toys they want to play with and once they have cleaned up, it is out of sight and out of mind.
No more messy bins and baskets around their room.
My hope is that you found some inspiration for what you can store under your bed and how you can store it.

Happy organizing!
