DIY RECYCLED METAL FLOWER POTS
DIY FLOWER POT
Am I the only one thinking about bringing some greenery and flowers into my home right now?
Of course not!
It is that time of the year when we all start yearning for new life and fresh beauty.
I had a bunch of empty quart-sized chalk paint cans sitting in my garage (I was surprised when I checked and found out that I had 14 of them!) so I decided to use them to make some cute DIY recycled plant pots.
These homemade flower pots make for such a quick and simple project and it is perfect for beginner DIYers!
I love that you can customize these with any color of paint and trims to match your home. And if you drill some holes in the bottom for drainage, these could become upcycled garden containers!
I was in Target the other day and saw this adorable flower pot. Being the budget-minded gal that I am, I decided to try to make them myself. And I have to say that I am pretty happy with the outcome!
Once I got started I couldn’t stop and made two styles of these budget plant pots. One is painted with ribbon trim and the other one is covered with rope using a glue gun. Both are very simple!
HOMEMADE FLOWER POTS
For the containers, you can use just about any metal piece. I liked the size of the quart paint cans, but vegetable cans will work as well. Be creative in picking your container. An interesting shape will produce a very nice finished product!
You could also use terra cotta pots or wood pots. Let your imagination lead you!

DIY RECYCLED FLOWER POTS
Let’s gather our supplies:
For the rope-style pots:
Recycled metal container (I used an old quart-sized chalk paint can)
For the painted pots:
Painter’s Tape
I used these faux flowers from Hobby Lobby:
Once you have your supplies gathered you can either watch the video below or scroll down for the tutorials (there are two separate tutorials…one for each style of flower pot).
ROPE WRAPPED VIDEO
Rope-wrapped pots:
You can check out the video here on YouTube.
Step One: Clean your metal container. Lightly sand it.
Step Two: Using your glue gun, attach the rope starting at the top of your container. Wind around the container until you reach the bottom.
Step Three: Arrange the flowers in the container as desired.
DIY Painted Flower Pots:
You can check out the video here on YouTube!
Step One: Clean your metal container. Lightly sand it.
Step Two: Paint your container with the white paint. I used 3 light coats. Dry between each coat.
Step Three: Using your painter’s tape, mark off the area you want to paint with the blue paint. Press down on the edges firmly to keep the paint from bleeding under the tape.
Step Four: Paint the stripe with blue paint. I used two light coats. Dry between each coat.
Step Five: Remove the painter’s tape. Lightly sand if desired.
Step Six: Attach the ribbon using your glue gun.
Step Seven: Arrange the flowers in the container as desired.
So simple, don’t you think?
One thing I love about this project is that you can get very creative. Different paint colors and trims will make a look that works for you. And the flowers? Use any type you like as long as the size works for your container.
If you want to use these outside for real plants, all you need to do is drill small holes in the bottom for drainage. A group of these would make adorable herb planters.
My flower pots are making their home in my kitchen windowsill and I LOVE it! It is like I brought a little touch of Spring inside a bit early. And when my color tastes change I can always switch out my flowers to reflect that.
