Hello!
Can you even believe we are already chatting about winterizing our homes? Didn’t summer just start?
Well, I guess not. So here we are.
Let me honest with y’all! When I was first on my own things like winterizing my home were completely overwhelming for me. I had no idea where to start, and once I knew where to start I did not know “how”. Lucky for me I had a lot of people who helped me and gave me advice.
If you want more coaching and encouragement in getting your cleaning process in order, check out my Cleaning Guide! It is full of great ideas, direction, and worksheets. Plus is addresses daily, monthly, seasonal cleaning and cleaning with kids.
That is one of the funny things about DIYing life: you need people to help you be successful! In other words, to do it yourself, you need people. Counter-intuitive, I know.
Since we are at the point in the year where we need to do some of this stuff, I have put together a handy checklist for you. It is my basic list of what will get done around my home over the next month or so.
One of the big ones that I always make sure to get done is to clean out the rain gutters along the roof. This one is pretty simple although a little messy. It is important because a rain gutter free of debris will help to keep water away from the foundation of your house.
How to clean your rain gutters:
- Using a ladder climb up to where you can easily see into and reach into your rain gutters. You can do this while standing on a ladder or on the roof. I choose the ladder because the roof feels too precarious for me.
- Use a small scoop or shovel to remove debris from the gutter. Either toss it into a bag on the roof or down onto the ground to pick up later. A helpful hint to make the clean up easier lay out a plastic tarp and throw the debris on that to pick up later.
- Using your garden hose run water through the gutters to make sure they are clear and ready for the rain and snow to start.
You are done!
If this is something you have never done before and you feel nervous about starting the job, I suggest asking a friend to help you. There is no shame in being a little hesitant to start…as long as you start. And if a friend makes starting this easier, then do it! Plus a friend will make the job a bit more fun.
